Tips For A Safe And Fun Halloween

ghosts in lawnHalloween is a fun and scary holiday to be enjoyed. All parents should take steps to ensure that their children have a safe “trick or treat” experience. There are a few essential safety tips all parents should be aware of while their children enjoy this adventurous holiday.
Children usually want to express their independence on Halloween, but all young children should be accompanied by an adult. Children should be escorted across streets and from house to house. Vehicular traffic is always a concern and children tend to put caution to the wind when they are making their way from door to door. To avoid embarrassing children who are 8 years and older, parents might consider standing at a distance while they are ringing the door bell and showing off their costumes.
Your children will be collecting a wide assortment of candy and treats on Halloween. It is extremely important that you tell your children that they need to wait until they get home to devour any of their candy. This is the time of year that people actually lace candy with harmful substances. This is very unfortunate, but it is a fact that all parents have to accept. Let your children know that all Halloween candy needs to be inspected for ghost slime or witches spells before they can enjoy it. As you inspect the candy look for anything that appears to be opened or tampered with in anyway. You must remove those treats from the bag of treats and throw them away.
When you are selecting or creating a Halloween costume, be sure the materials used in the costume are made of flame retardant materials. Every year there are serious injuries to children because they get into situations where their costumes literally go up in flames.

It is a great idea to use reflecting tape, glow-in-the dark paint or stickers and lots of glitter to create your children’s Halloween costume. When you use these materials, you provide an extra measure of safety for your children and it makes the costume stand out more in the dark.
If you have purchased a costume, make sure it fits your children properly. Check the hem for length to prevent your children from tripping and falling. Also make sure it is not too tight. You do not want anything that is too restrictive or cuts off blood circulation.
When you select a mask for your children, make sure that the eye and mouth holes fit the child’s face. If your child cannot see or breathe properly through a mask, this can be dangerous, especially at night. You may want to consider a hand painted mask made out of cardboard that can be attached to a stick handle and held up in front of their faces when they ring the door bell and collect their treats. Face painting is also a great option.
Halloween is often a chilly time. Remember to prepare ahead and incorporate warm undergarments into the chosen costume. You do not want to spoil the look of a beautiful fairy or a scary Darth Vader by making them wear a coat over the costume. Tights, warm undershirts & appropriate footwear can be used. 90% of body heat is lost through our heads, so a wig or fancy hat will do a lot to help keep children warm without spoiling the costume.
Following these simple tips will ensure that your children have a safe and happy trick or treat experience for Halloween.
